Attention all researchers of families in the area of Dorchester, Orangeburg,
and Colleton Counties, as well as "history buffs" in general! The newly
formed Upper Dorchester County Historical Society has made available (at last!) a
professionally printed, hard-backed edition of "The Diary of David Gavin",
including his account of his horseback trip to Mississippi in 1848. Please note;
it is indexed!
For those who are not familiar with David Gavin or his diary, he was a local
plantation owner who also functioned in many other capacities such as
surveyor, lawyer, etc., while keeping a daily account of everything around him. In the
regular portion of the diary, which dates from 1855 - 1874, he records what
is was like to run a plantation (before and after the Civil War), all the
political news and views of the day, descriptions of ailments and remedies (?), as
well as a commentary on most of the families living in the area. Many family
researchers, including myself, have found information about ancestors and
family members that had been unattainable elsewhere.

The UDCHS will use the proceeds from the sale of this book to help with the
preservation and restoration of the old Koger House on the Wire Road, near
Grover, in Dorchester Co.. This is the oldest known structure remaining in the
area, having been built in the late 1700s and used as a stagecoach stop.

The price is $45, with an additional $5 for postage. If you are interested,
send an E-mail to Peggy Phalen at . DO NOT send replies,
orders, or inquires back to the Orangeburgh List! Not only does it "clutter up"
the files and irritate the members, they will not be answered. If you fail
to get Peggy, you may reply to me directly.
