I've been to Orkney in August and twice in May for the
Trad Festival in Stromness (hope to make it a third
next year). I'm not sure how the colors are there in
the Fall, but my guess would be a bit softer than the
vibrant colors we're used to in a good season.
Nothing like weaving those colors in a fabric when
you're missing them. Fiona Williamson Pearson has
written a delightful book called Merrybegotten that
I'm just now getting into. She talks about rooing the
sheep which is pulling the longest fibers by hand to
use in spinning and weaving. Seems to me at first a
long way to go about getting the fiber when compared
to shearing, however, not as friendly to the sheep.
I've also washed a fleece or tow in my time and figure
the wool from rooing must be much easier to clean and
would provide a better quality all around. Nothing
like getting to know your sheep, too, except I'm a
hypocrite enough to question my ability to eat and
animal I know personally.
