Subject: [OREAR-L] John O'Rear of Hancock Co., GA
Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 17:38:11 -0600

At a recent genealogical seminar, I purchased some newly published books
on Hancock and Wilkes Counties, GA. I found the following references on
John Orear (son of Daniel Larsen Orear and wife Esther Thorn; husband of
Sarah):

1) "Land Deed Genealogy of Hancock Co., GA", Edward E. Van Schaick, Jr.
Editor:
p. 167
"Pages 318-319: State of GA, Hancock Co., 24th July 1799, John
Orear to Jesse Brantley, both of Hancock County, Georgia, for sum of
$150 for a tract of land lying on the waters of Shoulderbone and
containing 100 acres, it being part of a tract of 287 1/2 acres
originally granted to Sheredy Wise. Adjoining Thomas Hill's line
and Starling Cato's and Greene's line. Wit: Robert Nelson, Betsey
Turner and John Ragan, J.P. Reg: 24th April 1800."
[Note from DS: I have a photocopy of the deed which shows Sarah
Orear signed the dower release.]

2)"Wilkes County, GA Tax Records 1785-1805, Vol. 1" by Frank Parker
Hudson.
p. 206:
1790: John O'Rear--one poll (no land)--Capt. Hurley's District.
Neighbors in this district were: Finley, Bulock, Smith, Leveret,
Morrow, Robertson, Wright, Carrell, Elder, Anderson, Vasand,
Goldsen, Hudgens, Rosborow, Turner, Goalsen, Foster, Gibbs, Watts,
Philips, Allan, Norris, Gorden, Raymey, Burney, Littleton,
Pucket, Gillam, Tucker, Hightower, Chapman, Allder, Luck, Burdine
Ocholtree, Christepher, Chaffun, Lawson

According to Mr. Parker, the author of the tax book abstracts,
Capt. Hurley's District encompassed the area known now as the
169th GA Militia District plus a small section of the NW leg of
Taliaferro Co. Residents returned lands on Beaverdam and Kettle
Creeks and on LIttle River. Historic Phillips Mill Church and the
monument commemorating the Battle of Kettle Creek are found therein.

Here is my question:

What is the earliest reference anyone has seen on the O'Rears in GA?

I've always thought that John Orear (son of Daniel Larsen Orear and wife
Esther Thorn) was the earliest--along with his family members who
accompanied him on the move from Wilkes Co., NC to GA.

The above-mentioned tax record places him in Wilkes Co., GA by 1790 and
in Hancock Co., GA by 1799.

Those dates are interesting in that Daniel Orear, Rev. Soldier and son
of the above John, states in his 1834 pension application that he
"resided in NC until about 30-odd years [ago?]--i.e., moved from NC ca.
1804 or a little earlier.

He then states that about 1804 (or a few years earlier), he moved to
Hancock Co, GA where he "remained for several years." About 1807 he
moved to Bledsoe Co., TN, then about 1823 he moved to Frnaklin Co., TN.
By 5 April 1839 he was a resident of Chattooga Co., GA, then in 1739?
was residing in Lafayette, Walker Co., GA.

Anyway, it appears Daniel's father John was in GA at least 14 years
earlier than Daniel recalled.
