Donna,
While at the library in the past I looked at some microfilm records for Hancock
County, GA. In the Index to Deeds and Mortgages John O'Rear is shown as having
bought land from Sherwood Wise in 1799. This index also showed that John sold
land to Jesse Brantley in 1800. This is the same info you posted earlier.
Listed in the 1802 Tax Return for Hancock County are:
Daniel O'Rear
Ben O'Rear
John O'Rear, Sr.
William O'Rear
The earliest date I have for John O'Rear in Hancock County is 1796. Jno ORare
is listed in An Index to GA Tax Digest 1789-1799.
After seeing the Tax Return and Tax Digest I interpreted Daniel's statement
about residing in NC until about 30 odd years to mean his age, not number of
years he resided in NC. The age theory would make sense since there are records
reflecting the family was in Hancock Co in 1796. (And now your records show they
were in GA prior to 1796.
I have not looked at any Wilkes Co GA arecords, but hope to someday. It is
interesting that John showed up in Wilkes Co when Daniel stated that he moved
from NC to Hancock Co, not Wilkes Co.
According to info I received when I requested a copy of Daniel's pension file,
Daniel moved from Hancock County to Bledsoe County TN then to Franklin Co TN
about 1823. In Sep 1838 he gave his post office as Lafayette, Walker Co, GA.
In Apr 1839 he moved to Chattooga Co, GA.
Are we more confused than before?
Betty
