Subject: [OREAR-L] DAR Proof

I'm forwarding a message from Wanda Sawtelle that was intended for the
list regarding proof for DAR membership on an Orear lineage.

Also, I have a question similar to Wanda's. I'm a member of DAR on
another line. I would like to prove descent from Daniel Orear (m. Susan
Gooch). I "know" the line of my direct lineage from this couple, but I
can't prove it per se. How much "preponderance of evidence" does the
DAR allow?

Here's the problem: The children of Robert O'Rear (m. Sarah Knight)
can't be directly proven. The man left precious few court records and
no known family records. In the 1830 Warren Co. census, his household
in Warren Co., TN has young males and females, one adult male and one
adult female.

In 1850 Warren Co., Robert O'Rear, his second wife Elizabeth and his
presumed dau. Polly Orear (age 19), John Vance (presumably Polly's
future husband and Robert Orear's nephew--the son of Mahala Orear
Vance), and the mysterious Thomas Orear (presumably a son of Robert) are
living a few houses down from Calvin Orear and his wife Eda and children
(and the equally mysterious young adult Francis M. Orear--presumably
another son of Robert and brother to Calvin). Shortly after the 1850
census (in 1852, actually), Calvin and Eda Orear named a son (my
ancestor) Robert Orear (m. (2) Victoria Brooks Bowman).

Now, there is no direct link between Robert Orear (m. Sarah Knight) and
Calvin Orear showing a father/son relationship. However, in the 1850
census, they are the only Orears in Warren Co.--and in that part of the
state. We know from process of elimination that there isn't any other
likely father for Calvin. Plus, as mentioned above, Calvin named a son
Robert.

Also, Sarah Knight Orear, first wife of Robert, had an older brother
named Calvary F. Knight. Apparently, "Calvin" is a nickname for
"Calvary." I say this because Calvary F. Knight had a son named Calvary
who occasionally shows up in GA and AL court records as "Calvin Knight."
(This group of Orears was really into nicknames; both Robert
Knights--Calvin's father Robert and Calvin's son Robert both went by the
nickname "Robin." I have since learned Robin is a fairly standard old
nickname for Robert.)

Anyway, if someone has an idea as to how I could show proof for this
generation, I would appreciate it. Here's my Orear line:

1. Daniel Orear m. Susan Gooch (VA/NC/GA/TN/GA)
2. Robert Orear m. Sarah ("Sally") Knight (NC/GA/TN/AL/TN/AL/GA)
3. Calvin Orear m. Eda/Edy Webb (GA/TN)
4. Robert [Marion?] Orear m. (3) Mrs. Victoria (Brooks) Bowman (TN/TX)
5. Robert Marion O'Rear m. Ruth Madeline Neill (TX)
6. Mary Lou O'Rear m. Henry "Clifford" Haygood (TX)
7. Donna Ruth Haygood m. Kerry Darrell Sarchet (TX)

NOTE to Lee Hoffman: I was going through my inbox and discovered your
message asking what birthdates I had for Daniel Orear and siblings.
I've done some revising of my dates and will get back with you shortly
on that. Sorry to have overlooked your message!
