Subject: How did they get there

Hi

I have recently found that my Great Great Uncle and his brothers emigrated to Kansas via Virginia in about 1854. (They originated in England) Can someone tell me how they would have travelled to Kansas (i.e. Doniphan County) Eoulf it have been by wagon train all the way, or part of the way by boat up the Missouri River to St Josephs. Any information would be appreciated as being a Brit I do not have a clue as to how people got about in America in the 1850's
