Elizabeth,

Following are some of the major libraries here in Oregon:

University of Oregon, Knight Library. Has an excellent collection of Oregon (and other states) newspapers on microfilm. They also have an excellent web site which shows what they have.
http://libweb.uoregon.edu/ They are located in Eugene, Lane County, Or.

Salem, Oregon:
Oregon State Library. Good genealogy department, limited hours. I don't know what they have in newspapers, only been there once.

Oregon State Archives
I don't know about newspapers but lots of records. They also have an excellent web site which will tell you what their holding are:

Portland, Oregon:
Multnomah County Libary. They have the Oregonian and Oregon Journal (Portland) newspapers on microfilm.

Oregon Historical Society
Have an excellent collection of Oregon newspapers (and some Washington) on microfilm along with tons of Oregon records and history. Note, the Historical Society and Mult. County library are only 2-3 blocks from each other in downtown Portland.

Genealogical Forum of Oregon. This is the largest gen. society in Portland with an excellent libary and various records on microfilm. I don't think they have any newspapers.

Hopefully, this is helpful, and I hope you enjoy your trip to Oregon!

Janice

Subject: Libraries in OR

I am planning on making a trip to OR and WA in 2001. I hope to get to three or four of the larger libraries. Could subscribers on this list give me the names of the better (larger) libraries in OR. Also, where are the newspaper archives located. Location of libraries will to some degree determine the route of my trip.

I will be looking for information from several OR counties as well as books from other states.
I think I have read every book in the State Library here in OK as well as all the smaller county genealogical socities over the past three years.
