My great grandfather fought in the Bannock war in Oregon and received a
pension. I applied to the National Archives for the copy of his pension
application and received a wealth of family history material.

You might find the following book in any library with a genealogical
section. I include the entry for my great grandfather so that you can see
the type of information listed. It can be helpful when applying to the
National Archives:

According to the Index to Indian Wars Pension Files 1892-1926, transcribed
by Virgil D. White, National Historical Publishing Co., Waynsboro, TN, 1987:
James S. Church served in the US Army. His claim is SC-11413 OR 7 June 1922
srv. 1878, died 2 Feb 1931 at Portland , OR.

As you can see, the Indian wars in Oregon covered a span of more than a few
years. The Oregon Donation Land Act meant that non-Indians could stake a
claim to land no matter whether Indians lived on it or not. You can find
several good sites which explain the situation by typing in "Indian Wars
Oregon" in a search engine like Google.

My great grandfather wore his medal pinned to his lapel every Sunday for
church. I have a picture of him wearing it. Outside our local Scott Air
Force Base, we have a shop that ordered a replica of the medal for me. It
hangs from a ribbon. I think he was given the medal for having served. It is
the same medal issued in other states to those who fought in the army to
quell Indian uprisings.

Hope this helps your research.
