Hi,

I am very interested in your Mayes/Mays family linkages.

My great great grandfather was:
JAMES WILLIAM MAYES
b. 22 Dec 1828 in TN
d. 31 May 1906/07 Boone Co., AR
m. Sarah Isabella Elizabeth Drewry

I have no information on James' parents or siblings and do not know where in
Tennessee he was born. I would appreciate any help you can give me on
tracing his ancestry.

I also have a collateral connection to:
Susan "Susie" Alice Evans who married
WILLIAM "WILLIE" MAYS/MAYES
(See reference notes that follow)

- Photocopy of marriage record from LDS film 1,035,451 Boone Co., Ark.,
marriage records, book F, page 430, shows: Willie Mays, age 22 of Harrison
to Susie Evans, age 19 of Harrison, on 11 Sep 1898. (Harrison is in Boone
Co., AR; this record would place Willie's birth at about 1876)

- 1880 US Census, Town of Harrison, Boone Co., AR, ED #18, sheet 6, dwelling
52, family 53, shows: Mays, James P., white, male, 50, married, occupation
tinner, b. VA, both parents b. VA; Sarah J., white, female, 40, wife,
married, keeping house, b. TN, fa. b. TN, mo. b. KY; Lillie V., white,
female, 18, daughter, single, b. TN, fa. b. VA, mo. b. TN; John W., white,
male, 4, son, single, b. AR, fa. b. VA, mo. b. TN. (I suspect that the son,
John W. is "Willie" who married Susie Evans.)

- 1900 US Census, Boone Co., Ark., Summit Twp., ED#25, Sheet 21A, line 40,
dwelling 370, family 374, shows:
Evans, Daniel W., -----;
Mayes, Susan A., dau., b. Sep. 1879, 20 yrs, widowed, given birth 1 child
living, b. AR, parents b. TN; -----;
Mayes, Walter H., grandson, b. Apr 1899, 1 yr, b. AR, parents b. AR.
(Though the record shows Susie to be widowed, the following record of a
divorce from Will Mays seems to contradict that notion.)

- Photocopy of Decree of Divorce of Susie Mays, Plaintiff, and Will Mays,
Defendant, Latah Co., ID, dated 13 Jun 1902. (Susie may have moved to Idaho
to stay with her older half-sister, Mary Almeda (Roark) Howton.)

(The following paragraph is intended to show where her son Walter Harvey
Mays/Mayes may have been living at various times.)
Susie (Evans) Mays married her second husband, John Qualls, in 1903 in
Washington. Since John was also from Arkansas they probably knew each other
prior to her divorce. It is unclear whether they stayed in Washington or
not, since they were back in Hilltop, Boone Co., Arkansas by 1906. Susie's
address was Osage, Arkansas on February 15, 1907 and Kingsley, Arkansas
March 1st and 18th, 1907. Osage was in Carroll County very near the Boone
Co. line; however, the only reference I can see to a populated place today
known as Kingsley is in St. Francis Co. I suspect that Kingsley was small
community now no longer existing but near Harrison in Boone County, the
nearest express office at the time. Susie may have also lived at Alpena in
Boone or Carroll Co., Arkansas, at one time. She was living in Chehalis,
Washington in 1942 and 1945 but was in Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1951.

(Notes about Walter Harvey Mays/Mayes)
Walter made his home in Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1957 when his mother died.
In the later years of his life he worked in a laundry in Klamath Falls,
Oregon. Walter's death came at age 76 of pneumonia in the Veterans
Administrations Hospital in Washington. He was a resident of Portland, OR
at the time of his death. His obituary reads:

Mays
Walter Harvey Mays, 76, died October 26, 1975, at Portland, Ore. He is
survived by wife, Mabel M. Mays, Eugene, Ore.; daughters, Norma Jean
Whistler, Eugene, Ore., Pauline Fedderson, Los Angeles, Calif.; sons Robert
Mays, Atlanta, Ind., Raymond Mays, Aloha, Ore.; sisters, Alice Heaton,
Merrill, Ore., Bee Luper, city, Daisy Plumlee, Merrill, Ore., Nettie Snider,
city; brother, Troy Qualls, Merrill, Ore,; foster children, Furman Watson
Tupper, Beverly Lou Wright, Valorie Ilene Tupper; 11 grandchildren; one
great-grandchil. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct 29, 1975, at
2:30 p.m. in O'Hair's Funeral Chapel. Concluding services will follow at
Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens.

I believe these are some new locations for you and hope they help you with
your research. If you have any information that might help me locate
information on my great great grandfather's family I would very much
appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks in advance
Delores (Buell) Eveland
