20 Years Ago, June 13, 1984
Fourteen students from the Mid-Columbia are among 1,434 graduating seniors
in Oregon who have been announced as 1984 Oregon Scholars by the Oregon
State Scholarship Commissions. They are:
Arlington-Amber L. Thompson; Dufur-Monica Baumgartner; The Dalles-Shannon
Anderson, Bridget Bailey, Kent D. Clayton, Deborah Dahling, Rae N. French,
Shannon Kornegay, Amy Nelson, Fritz Tonn, Stephen Twelker and Blair A.
Wilcox, Wahtonka-Polly Harth; Wasco County High- Karla R. Lawson.
40 Years Ago, June 13, 1964
Nine local boys, all students at the two high schools in The Dalles,
Wahtonka and The Dalles high, have been selected by the Post 19 American
Legion committee to attend Beaver Boys State at Corvallis [Oregon] June
14-21. The boys from Wahtonka High School and their sponsors, Don Calder
Jr., Westgate Super Market; Bob Runie, by Harvey Aluminum; Clare Kosnek by
Cherry City Motel; with Larry Brown as an alternate. The boys from The
Dalles and their sponsors, Larry Austin, sponsored by The Dalles Kiwanis
Club; John Moore, by D.S. Elwood; Dick Adkission, by Woolsey Firestone Tire
Service; Phil Frischmuth, by Mauser Lumber Co.; Gary Ordway, by Williams ID
Store; and Mike Reynolds, The Dalles TV company.
The Mosier [Oregon] Legion Auxiliary met June 4 at the home of Mrs. Claude
Berthold, Election of officers was held: President Mrs. Claude Berthold;
vice president Mrs. Rod Taylor; secretary Mrs. Frank Marsh; treasurer, Mrs.
Edna Evans; sergeant at arms, Mrs. Margaret Reed; and chaplain, Mrs. Gladys
Priebe.
60 Years Ago, June 13, 1944
2nd Lieut. Joseph F. Glennie has been wounded while on duty in the South
Pacific and is now in a hospital in New Guinea, according to word received
here by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Glennie. He entered the service with
the 186th infantry before the war was declared.
80 Years Ago, June 20, 1924
Roscoe Wilson, jointly indicted with William Quinn for the theft of cattle
from Cleve A. Hillgen, was convicted by a jury in the circuit court last
night after three hours and 47 minutes of deliberation. Only one ballot was
taken, it was reported. Quinn was convicted Tuesday of the same charge. Both
will probably be sentenced tomorrow morning.
James Thrall, known character of The Dalles, for whose arrest Sheriff Levi
Chrisman has held a warrant for more than a year on a charge of forgery, was
arrested by the chief of police at Vancouver, Washington last night
according to word reaching this city today. Thrall was indicted by a grand
jury here upon the complaint of Henry McCullough, but disappeared before
Chrisman had issued a warrant for his arrest.
100 Years Ago, June 12, 1904
G.A. Young & Sons shipped two trainloads of sheep to Colorado from Shaniko
[Oregon] last week. The deal is the most extensive by any one grower in the
history of Wasco County. The buyer is B.F. Saunders of Salt Lake who paid
$1.50 straight through. The shipment was made up of an exceptionally fine
bunch of ewes and lambs.
