20 Years Ago, June 6, 1984

At the request of the county juvenile department, city police will begin
enforcing the state curfew law in The Dalles, Jim Roth, director of the
county juvenile department, announced today that the enforcement would
begin. The city repealed its curfew law in 1982 following a U.S. Supreme
Court decision that a similar Louisiana ordinance was invalid.

The Union Bobcats have been growling rather loudly all season long until
Tuesday afternoon when Scott Byrd and Jeff McCall snuck up behind them and
shoved an overdose of tranquilizers down their throats. Byrd accounted for
all the Wahtonka scoring with a three run home run, while McCall-a cool,
lanky sophomore-kept the Bobcats under sedation for six innings on the
mound. The duo led the Eagles to a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the
state Class A baseball playoffs in The Dalles. The Eagles, now 20-6, have to
wait until this evening to find out where they will travel for Fridays
semifinals.

40 Years Ago, June 6, 1964

Members of Local 720 of the Culinary Alliance voted 101-23 Friday in favor
of a strike if attempts at negotiation fail, Union Secretary Mrs. Frances
Webber said this morning. The vote represented about 60 percent of the
locals membership within its jurisdiction, which includes The Dalles,
Rufus, and Arlington, Mrs. Webber said.

Susan Bronkey, DHS senior this fall, has been chosen by the Oregon United
Church Youth from among 18 applicants to be one of two delegates to the
United Church Youth National Forum to be held in Washington, D.C. June 27 to
July 3. Richard White, director of counseling and guidance at The Dalles
High School, was also chosen to be the adult adviser to the Oregon
delegation. The forum, under the sponsorship of the First Congregational
Church, will draw young people from across the United States. Theme of the
form is The Christian Person and Political Action.

60 Years Ago, June 6, 1944

Due to inability to obtain and [sic] adequate supply of trained help it will
be necessary to close one of the floors of the state hospital at The Dalles,
it was announced today by Dr. J.M. Odell, hospital superintendent. As a
result of this curtailment no more patients will be admitted to the state
hospital here until the situation improves Dr. Odell said.

The annual Farmers Union picnic was held Saturday at Dufur [Oregon] with
good attendance reported. The usual festivities, including races and a
baseball game were enjoyed. Fewer persons than usual attended from The
Dalles, due to the gasoline shortage.

Mrs. Hattie Fulkerson and Miss Emma Elizabeth Dyball were initiated as new
members of the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the meeting held
Friday evening, June 2, at the community room at the civic auditorium. Mrs.
Herbert R. Matthieu, conducted the business session when it was announced
that a sewing club meeting of the group would be held June 8 at the home of
Mrs. Robert Holmes.

80 Years Ago, June 6, 1924

Willard Quinn will face trial tomorrow morning on indictments No. 1 charging
him with the theft of a bull from Cleve Hillgen. Judge Fred W. Wilson in the
circuit court his [sic] morning denied Quinn a change of venue on the
grounds that Wasco County was largely cattle country and that the defendant
could not obtain a fair and impartial jury. Judge Wilson held that the
grounds for a change of venue were not justified and that Wasco County was
not largely a cattle country.

100 Years Ago, June 6, 1904

W. M. Lazarshak, an employee of the Mt. Hood Lumber Company at Hood River
[Oregon], met his death Saturday afternoon by being struck by a log at the
foot of a chute. He was knocked into the river and floated a mile down the
stream before his body was recovered. He was a married man, about 35 years
old. His wife lives at Allegheny City, PA.
