Looking Back: The Dalles Chronicle, April 10, 2011
40 Years Ago, April 10, 1971
Formerly a druggist here for a few years in the early 1950’s, Horace Hertel said his return to The Dalles to take over Service Drug at E. Second and Court Streets from the former owner, Walt Carte, was “quite a homecoming.” A graduate of The Dalles High School, Hertel said his mother, Mrs. Freda Hertel, lives here, and his brother Gil Hertel is manager of United States National Bank in Dufur.
While a crew assigned by city police was digging in Sorosis Park in search of bones to go with the skull unearthed earlier in the week, a local contractor came forth with part of a human jawbone that apparently had been in some trash removed from beneath the porch of a house. Norm Odegaard said Herb Schmidt of Interstate Exterminators uncovered the heavily deteriorated bone. It came from beneath the Paul Sandoval home at 14__ E. 11th Street, where Interstate had been doing some work.
Peace officers of the area are in session at a preliminary arson investigation school offered by Oregon State Police with Lt. Beers of Milwaukie as the instructor.
