"Ancestry is *not* charging for access to trees or selling
trees: access will remain free from both the RootsWeb and
Ancestry side as it has always been.
"What Ancestry is offering for an extra charge is access to
a special search engine to search the trees for you. Folks
can still search the trees manually or browse the trees for
free the same way they always have.
"Think of it as a research assistant: you can hire someone
to help you look for your ancestors, or you can research
yourself for free. Hiring a human research assistant
doesn't sell them the data being researched, or change the
rules so that only they are allowed to look.
"That's essentially what it is, except that it's
computerized, not human."

Subject: stop stop stop....re ancestry and trees.....
ONEWORLDTREE is an internal search engine....
why wouldnt you want your tree to participate in a mega engine on ancestry.com....
have you EVER tried to look thru a big, long worldconnect for your family...
DO YOU KNOW what the amount of time is involved to do this....
the amount of time even with the advance search tools....
It is a huge undertaking...
made more huge if you have a very common name....
so why would you want to exclude the gedcom you put on ancestry now, when a new search engine is being created to make the job easier....
why did you put your gedcom there in the FIRST place if you are now going to remove it.....and now, removing it when it might get you more hits than ever before....????
please... read the info on the link below and understand it, question it and give some thought BEFORE you start removing your stuff......
http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/about.aspx
does the engine come with a price... why sure, why shouldnt it.... ? it does NOT mean that your gedcoms are not accessible for free... only the search engine to look at them in one stroke is for a fee.... and for those who wish to use that vs advanced search, it will be worth the price.......
others, for free, can look at the gedcoms on rootsweb.com and ancestry.com and use the old advanced search..... ..

No question is dumb Dave. What is dumb is not asking the question in
the first place. So keep asking away as it helps us all learn new
things.

Why should they make money on your hard work and you get nothing?

>Also, isn't Ancestry already charging for this by requiring membership fees?
Yes, in a way but the charge is for a whole lot of other things to so
it isn't that bad, it is like paying a membership fee to the Forum.
With their new membership fees they are going to be closing a lot of
us retired folks out of their site. I for one think they are getting
a bit greedy, just like the oil company's with the gas prices.
Just my humble opinion so keep those questions coming Dave,
