"The Church in Orkney" (printing 1907) lists only the following ministers
with this surname or similar (there is no Thomas):
Johnston, Rev. George, Kirkwall
Johnston, S. Knox, Stromness
Johnston, Rev. Dr. David
Johnston, Rev. George, Burray
Johnston, Mr., of Kirkcaldy
