Gail Kimberling named editor of News-Times

Gail Kimberling has been named managing editor of the News-Times, replacing long-time editor Leslie O'Donnell, who resigned to accept a job as managing editor of a twice-weekly newspaper in New England.

Kimberling, a Lincoln County resident for nearly 34 years, is a Taft High School graduate. She attended Southern Oregon College and the University of Oregon.

Kimberling is not a new-comer to the News-Times staff. She was hired by the newspaper in 1992 as a part-time feature writer and later became the north county bureau chief, covering all aspects of news in the Lincoln City area. Kimberling left the News-Times in 2001 to become managing editor at the Lincoln City News-Guard, a position she held until April of this year.

News-Times Publisher Mark Bryan said, "We're thrilled to have Gail back at the News-Times. When the announcement was made to the staff on Friday, a very enthusiastic round of applause erupted, letting Gail know she was with family."

Bryan said O'Donnell's departure had the potential of forcing the newspaper to fill the managing editor position with someone who doesn't have a strong connection with the communities in Lincoln County, "but Gail will fill that role beautifully," he said. "She is well known and respected throughout our readership area and by her peers in the newspaper industry." Bryan added that he is confident readers will continue to be pleased with the level of quality journalism they have come to expect from the News-Times.

During her career, Kimberling has won a number of awards for her writing and photography from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. She was also the recipient of an Equality Award in 2002 from the Human Rights Campaign of Oregon, and was presented the Lincoln City "Mayor's Award" in April 2004.

Kimberling is currently involved with several community organizations. She is on the board of directors of Angels Anonymous and 4Cs, is on the 9/11 Lincoln City Memorial Committee, and is a member of the Lincoln City Relay for Life steering committee.

Kimberling's husband, Dave, is a local building contractor. The couple have been married for 28 years and are the parents of four children: Lee works with Kimberling Construction in Lincoln City; Megan is a veterinary technician in Ontario, Ore.; Kara will graduate in May with a degree in international relations from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts; and Mathew is currently in basic training with the U.S. Air Force at Lackland AFB, Texas. They are the grandparents of one, with two more on the way.

Kimberling is an avid swimmer, cyclist and runner, and she enjoys competing in road races, cycling events, and sprint- and Olympic-distance triathlons.
