I read this message on the census transcribers list this morning. It made so
much sense that I thought I would pass it on. Married women, use your maiden
name on the census form. I have checked this out with the census office here
in Toledo and was told that it does not matter which name you use as a
surname. The final tabulation is mainly concerned with the statistics.
I have been transcribing North Dakota census from 1900 and 1910 and it is
amazing how many times the enumerator entered the surname of the husband then
went on to call the woman only Mrs., wife, Mary (no last name) or in some
cases simply ditto marks.
