This is in reply to Peggy Chamblin, who is looking for information about
her mother, Elizabeth Wilson, who was a resident at the Orphan Asylum
Society of Brooklyn. I have a list of every child who was resident at the
institution, and I found Elizabeth Wilson in my list, resident from 1919
until 1922. She was discharged to relatives. The agency later changed
its name to "Brookwood". In about 1990 I cataloged these records and sent
them to the Social Welfare History Archives at the University of
Minnesota, where they are now available, and, I believe, are owned by the
archive.
I also wrote a very short history of the institution, which I will be
happy to send to Peggy if she contacts me.
I am now writing a history of child welfare in New York, and would like to
speak with anyone who was a child in care away from her/his own family, or
who had a parent who was either a foster child or institution resident; or
parents whose children were placed in either foster family or
institutional care; or persons who were employed in the child welfare
system.
I hope this information is useful.

Have you checked out the hits you get by searching on google.com for
"Orphan Asylum of Brooklyn" or "Orphan Asylum Society of Brooklyn"?
Don't forget to frame the words in quotation marks when you search, so
you only get only hits relating to this specific institution and not any
site with any of the words. The quotation marks make the difference
between getting 1,990 hits or 13 hits.
