Hi Marilyn,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. I'm way behind on my
emails. I've contact 2 orphanages in my research. First I put the name
of the orphanage in the search engine on my computer and tried to locate
them through any possible websites. On the first orphanage I found out
that the facility was now a mental health institution. By contacting
the head of that facility, I located one of their offices in another
part of the state that held the records for that long since closed down
orphanage.

On the other occasion, I found a website for the old orphanage. There
was no information in the site that told me how to contact anyone, but I
knew there had to be someone out there, otherwise where did that website
come from. So I called the directory assistant in the city the
orphanage was located in. They only had a nursing home with the same
name, but not an orphanage. I called the nursing home and was fortunate
to speak with a woman who had access to the orphanage files.

So it's not the same every time you try to contact an orphanage, but in
both of my situations the records were handed over to or left behind for
whoever took over the buildings. Sometimes the records are entrusted
the next generation of the organization or church that sponsored the
orphanage. For instance; Odd Fellows Home, Orphans of Sailors, Lutheran
Home, etc. Hopefully they are thoughtful about the value of those old
records. Also, call historical societies and local libraries. They
might know the history of those orphanages. But don't be shy about
calling around, asking questions and sending emails.

If you know the name of that orphanage, you should put it in your
messages to this list. There may be a reader from that orphanage.

Good luck in your search.

Angie

Subject: [Orphanages] Birmingham Orphanages

Hi,
My grandmother, Sarah Poole, grew up in an orphanage in Birmingham. I
believe she was sent to the orphanage in the early 1900's. How does one
go about seeing or obtaining the records of the children in the
orphanages?

Thanks,
