Funeral of Danny Baker is Held
Tragic Death of This Lovable Boy Saddens the Whole Community.
Funeral services over the remains of the late Danny Baker, who was drowned while skating Tuesday evening, was held this afternoon. Reverend Nathan Evans of the Methodist church officiating. The Baker home in Jackson street was filled with schoolmates and friends of this bright boy, whose tragic death saddened the whole community. Mr. Evans spoke words of consolation and sympathy to the bereaved family, whose grief is more terrible on account of the suddenness of the loss, using the text from 2 Sam. 12:23, "I shall go to him, he can not return to me," and at the close of his address quoted the following touching lines:
Our own are our own forever
God taketh not back his gift;
They may pass beyond our vision,
But our souls shall find them out,
When the waiting is all accomplished
And the deathly shadows lift,
And glory is given for grieving,
And the surety of God for doubt.
We may find the waiting bitter,
And count the silence long;
God knoweth we are dust
And pitieth our pain
And when faith has changed to fullness,
And the silence changed to song
We shall eat the fruit of patience
And hunger not again.
So sorrowing hearts, who humbly
In darkness all alone
Sit missing a dear lost presence
And the joy of a vanish day,
Be comforted with this message
That our own are forever our own,
And God who gave the precious gift,
He takes it never away.
A quartette composed of Mrs. T.A. Wylie, Mrs. F.M. Sexton, A.E. Gronewald and F.M. Sexton sang three beautiful selections, "Thy Will Be done", "Silently the Shades of Evening", and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere".
Another promising young life is gone from the community, and oh, the pity of it, gone so needlessly, leaving behind such a heartache and unspeakable vacancy in the home life, and so many unfulfilled hopes and ambitions in the hearts of his parents, with whom the whole city is mourning the loss of this happy, lovable lad.

Chief Inspects Skating Pond
Chief of Police Kurtz after inspecting the skating pond on the slough where hundreds of people are enjoying the sport every day, has decided to erect a wire across the east end of the safe ice, on which will be strung lanterns to warn skaters of the danger existing beyond that line. The water from the artesian well has cut its way through the ice in many places and is making it too thin and dangerous in other places. The chief warns the skaters that those venturing east of the wire do so at their own risk, as the ice there has been inspected and declared unsafe.
