Preliminary figures indicate a slight increase in Wasco County's gross farm
income during 1962, county agent John Frizzell reported this week. The total
income from agriculture during the year was estimated at $11,305,400. A
major factor in the increase was the grain crop. This was one of the best
year's ever experienced by Wasco County grain producers in per-acre yield.
The new president of the Wasco County Tax League is Bert Keith, elected at a
meeting Thursday. The league re-elected Alf Wernmark vice president and
chose Mrs. Charles Phillips Jr. as treasurer and Mrs. Fred C. Spivey as
secretary. Keith plans to call a board of director's meeting to formulate a
league program for the coming year.
A Christmas program was presented by the Wishram (Washington) School
Thursday evening, December 17. Opening the program was a musical interlude

Purchase of the Maupin (Oregon) generating and distribution system for
electrical power by the Wasco Electric Cooperative was the subject of a
hearing held today at Maupin before representatives of the Oregon public
utilities commission. If the commission approves the contemplated purchase
and an agreement is reached on the price to be paid , the Wasco Electric
Cooperative will take over the complete Maupin system, according to a
statement by W. Emery Davis, president of the cooperative. Negotiations for
the purchase have been underway for several months, Davis revealed.
There will be room for only 105 persons at the joint Lions-Kiwanis noon
luncheon January 4 at which Captain Marion Carl, Oregon's war ace will
speak. Captain Carl's appearance here will be under the auspices of the
county war bond committee.

Moonshine at $50 a gallon is a little too expensive, even in these supposed
strict prohibition days, is the opinion of George Melcher, who paid a fine
of that amount this morning in the police court for having a gallon of the
liquor in his possession. Melcher was arrested on First Street by Chief of
Police Frank Heater and Traffic Officer Bud Crofton. He had only a pint on
his person at the time but at the request of Heater, he took the officers to
where the gallon was cached. The fine was imposed by City Recorder Frank
French.
Drs. V.L. and C.W. Hamilton have established a suite of offices on the fifth
floor of the First National Bank Building. The former comes from Coquille
(Oregon) where he was also mayor, while Dr. C.W. Hamilton gave up his
practice in Baker (Oregon) to enter into partnership with his brother in The
Dalles, just midway between the two other towns.

D.J. Harris, who has been superintendent of the Columbia Southern Railroad
for the past year, has handed in his resignation to take effect the first of
the year. Mr. Harris has not given out what he will follow in the future,
though we have been informed he will remain in Shaniko (Oregon) at least for
a while.
