A recall effort against Wasco County Sheriff Bob Brown ended Tuesday when a
group circulating petitions for the recall failed to meet a 5 p.m. deadline
for turning in the petitions to the county clerks office. Wasco County
Clerk Sue Proffitt said she was notified at midafternoon on Tuesday by a
spokesman for the Committee for Fair and Impartial Wasco County Government
that the petitions would not be filed.
Sealed bids on farm equipment sold by the Internal Revenue Service brought a
total of $21,787.56, far below the $482,649 in estate taxes the IRS claims
Al Stelzer owes. Included was a combine which sold for $5,000. There were
vehicles and other farm equipment involved.

Note: The newspapers for November 23, 1963 were filled entirely with stories
about the assassination of President John Kennedy. Item in Looking Back are

All three members of a Portland family was killed early Monday three miles
west of Hood River (Oregon) on US 30 when the driver lost control and their
westbound car skidded sideways in front of a truck. They were identified by
the office of state police here as Rubie Lee Drake, the driver; William E.
Drake, her husband; and Shirley Ann Drake, 14, their daughter.

A former livestock owner from Antelope (Oregon) today holds the
distinguished flying cross, one of the top ranking army valor awards. He is
S/Sgt. Robert E. McGreer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. McGreer and assistant
radio operator of the Lib ship, Sweet Adeline, who received his award in
connection with the record low level bombing attack which his Lib group made
on the Rumanian oil fields at Ploesti.
Walter R. Bailey, manager of the Columbia Fruit Growers, who a couple of
weeks ago was seriously injured when a piece of hot metal flew into his left
leg when a motor truck gasoline tank exploded at Rufus (Oregon), this
morning for the first time returned to his desk in the warehouse at the foot
of Madison street. His leg is still encased in a cast, but he is able to
walk stiff-kneed, unassisted, except that he uses a cane.

Three million gallons of water a day can be pumped from the new city well
without maximum pressure. Announcement to this effect was made today,
following a test of the well by members of the water commission and, is
beyond their greatest expectations. The well was drilled by George, Scott, a
Portland contractor, at a cost of $2,400. He said last night that he
believed that with maximum pressure the well would deliver 4,000,000 gallons
of water every 24 hours.

Last Wednesday an overcoat and some other articles were stolen from the
California restaurant and since that time Marshall Wood has been on the
lookout for the culprit. Saturday afternoon he arrested one Ben DGrout, who
has been in the city since last September, and of late seemed to have no
occupation. DGrout admitted the theft and his case came up this afternoon.
Our friend, J.T. Rorick, who has been ill for some time past, we learn is
suffering with a genuine case of typhoid fever. We trust, however that J.T.
will down the illness and come out on top.
Tomorrow night the Wasco Tribe, I.O.R.M. [Improved Order of Red Men] will
have a grand ball at the Baldwin opera house. With Birgfields orchestra
furnishing the best of music and the effort which has been made to make this
affair a success, a good time is assured all who attend.
