Subject: [OSTFRIESEN-L] OF church records on LDS microfilms
Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 13:03:12 EST

Just one little word of caution about using these records. They are mostly of
HAND WRITTEN COPIES of the originals. As such they are SECONDARY sources.
Nuerous transcription errors have been found in them. OSBs are secondary
sources too, of course.

Unfortunately the original Norden records are particularly hard to get at.
Even if you go to Norden, there is only one researcher authorized to touch the
books. A better bet is to use the microfiches of the originals of all (?)
Lutheran OF church records at the Superintendents office in Aurich, or the
Hannover State Central Lutheran church office in Hannover, which has all
Hannover State church records (up to at least 1864) on microfiche.

Anyone researching in Norden records should be aware that the records were
kept in 2 separate parallel sets of books: Stadt and Amt (or Land). (city and
adjacent small communities) If you don't find it in one, it may be in the
other.
