Samuel Swan Owens, Jr. was born on October 25, 1808, in Smith County, TN.
He married Mary Ann "Polly" Carter on March 22, 1829 in Hardeman Co., TN.
Samuel died January 7, 1895, in Savage, Fannin Co., TX and is buried at
Grove Hill Cemetery, Fannin Co., TX. Mary Ann Carter was born on February
11, 1812, in Hardeman Co., TN and died on April 16, 1899, also in Savage.
She too is buried at Grove Hill Cemetery. Their children were: James
Washington "Wash" Owens, William Rufus Nealy Owens, Pleasant Carrol "Pleas"
Owens, Bashaba Elizabeth Allen Owens, Samuel Swan Owens III, Lucy Ann Owens,
Mary Ellen Owens, Sarah Margaret Owens, Mahinia Carolina Owens, Wilson
Lafayette "Fate" Owens, Francis Marion "France" Owens, Thomas Elihu Owens,
Jesse Monroe Owens, and Martha E. A. Owens. The Samuel Swan Owens family
lived in Old Tishomingo (Prentiss Co.) Co., MS, from before the 1850 census
until after the 1880 census before migrating to the Fannin/Hunt Co. area of
TX.

The migration of the Owens clan to Texas was influenced by a dispute between
Fate Owens, and the Smalley family, over the boundary lines of Fate's new
farm, which was located in Fannin County, Texas. Brothers Wash, Pleas, Tom,
Francis and Jesse, with their father, mother, sisters, wives and children,
arrived in Wolfe City, Hunt Co, TX, in the Fall of 1889, ready to help
brother Fate. The trip was made with approximately forty or fifty Owens
relatives aboard two railroad cars. They arrived at Wolfe's Mill, now Wolfe
City, and made necessary purchases for their life at the Nail and Cook
Hardware Store. From here, the Owens Clan settled in Savage. Savage was a
small community located between Leonard and Wolfe City. It is said that at
one time there were some four hundred Owens family members living in the
Savage and Hickory Creek communities.

James Washington Owens was born on December 28, 1829, in Hardeman Co., TN.
He died on August 27, 1902, in Fannin Co., TX and is buried at Grove Hill
Cemetery, Fannin Co., TX. He married three times. The name of his first
wife is unknown. This marriage probably occurred in 1850 or 1851 in Old
Tishomingo Co., MS. It is believed he had three children from this
marriage: Mary Ann Owens, Sarah Elizabeth Owens, and William R. "Doug"
Owens. He married again in probably the 1860-1865 timeframe to probably
Susan Dyer (or Dowell). A tombstone exists in Hinkle Creek Baptist Church
Cemetery in present-day Alcorn Co., MS, for Susie A. Owens, wife of J. W.
Owens, born June 13, 1840, and died January 11, 1870. The children from
this marriage were: Jesse Edgar Owens, James Lafayette Owens, Muky Mailly
"Meekie" Owens, Robert E. Lee Owens, Samuel Rufus Owens, and Minnie Florence
Owens. James Washington Owens married Elizabeth Jane Murley Carter Yates on
February 14, 1877 in Prentiss Co., MS. She died sometime after 1900 in
Fannin Co., TX and is probably buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Fannin Co.,
TX.

Mary Ann Owens was born October 3, 1852, in Rienzi, Old Tishomingo Co. (now
Alcorn Co.) MS. She died on September 5, 1925, in Bailey, Fannin Co., TX,
and is buried in Grove Hill Cemetery. Mary Ann's first child was Ella
Theodosia Owens (no record exists of a marriage nor is the name of the
father known). Mary Ann married John Hamilton Carter on September 19, 1893,
in Fannin Co., TX. John Hamilton Carter was born August 3, 1854, in MS, and
died July 2, 1960, in Bailey, Fannin Co., TX and is also buried in Grove
Hill Cemetery. John Carter's mother was Elizabeth Jane Murley Carter Yates,
the third wife of Mary Ann's father, James Washington Owens (above). The
child from the marriage of John and Mary Ann Carter was Lillian Viola
Carter.

Lillian Viola Carter was born March 6, 1895, in Ferris, Ellis Co., TX. She
died on July 17, 1980, in Irving, Dallas Co., TX and is buried in Arledge
Ridge Cemetery, Fannin Co., TX. She married Jesse Bruce Oates, Sr., on
March 14, 1920, in Ector, Fannin Co., TX. Jesse Bruce Oates was born on
February 3, 1891, in Chicota, Lamar Co., TX. He died on December 3, 1972,
in Irving, Dallas Co., TX and is also buried in Arledge Ridge Cemetery.
Their children were: Jesse Bruce Oates, Jr., Robert Daniel Oates, and Mary
Elizabeth Oates.

Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Oates was born on February 26, 1926, in Bailey, Fannin
Co., TX. She died March 24, 1992, in Irving, Dallas Co., TX and is buried
in Oak Grove Cemetery, Irving, Dallas Co., TX. She married Joe Francis
Turner. Their children were: Ronald Joe Turner and Karen Lynn Turner.
