Hello Lou,
I found my detailed street map book of Chester County... sorry I was
off by an exit or two. Route 10 is what you cross before you come to
the beautiful winding road that takes you right across Octoraro Lake.
The route that goes across Octoraro Lake is NOT Route 10 but Route
472, also called Lancaster Pike (in Lower Oxford in Chester County)
but then called Kirkwood Pike (where it is shown on the map in
Lancaster County).
This ADC "Chester County, PA Street Map, 10th Edition" book (about
$10) is the source I am referencing, and it has a list of cemeteries
in Chester County and their map coordinates. Unfortunately, there is
no Octoraro Cemetery listed, although there are quite a few cemeteries
listed here! Is it possible that the name has been changed - what is
the date you are looking for? There are no cemeteries on the quadrants
immediately around the lake, and the nearest church is Mount Vernon,
which is a huge Mennonite church on a hill over looking the lake.
However, the last exit going south on Route 1 before you enter
Maryland is 272, and there are two cemeteries listed there, Nottingham
and Union. Route 272 crosses Octoraro Creek.
I should have more Chester and Delaware County reference materials
around here, probably still in a box, and as I find them they will be
available sources, let me know what else you need.
Did you know that you can find the location of most any cemetery by
its current name through the Geographic Names Information System
Website, http://mapping.usgs.gov/?
I went to the query page:
http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html
and put in Octoraro, Cemetery and Pennsylvania and no cemetery
listing/location for that information either, so I would venture a
guess that the name has been changed. There IS a current listing in
this street map book for Chester County for a Brandywine Presbyterian
Church, so if you called (610)555-1212 you maybe could ask someone
there if they know of the cemetery you seek!
Hope this helps! :)
Best regards,
Cynthia
