Alice,
I have a question, in addition to the "Bates" history on the, Making of America, project there is also the "The war of the rebellion: a compilation of the official records of the Union and Confederate armies". Do you know if the rosters of the regiments are listed in the official records?

I think most of the people on the list know that
S. P. Bates' History of the PA Volunteers, 1861-
1865 is on line at the University of Michigan
as part of its participation of the Making of
American project.

You can search it by name, but The Washington
Post and my browser seem to be having an argument this
morning, so I will send the URL later.

If you want to search the five volumes by regiment,
I developed a table of contents for each of the
volumes and have it on-line on my PA in the Civil
War web site at:

http://www.pa-roots.com/~pacw/

When you click the Bates' History on-line link
you will links for each of the 5 volumes. Select
the volume containing the number of the regiment
you are seeking, scroll down the page until
you find the regiment, and click on the page number
to the right of the regiment number.

The section for each regiment is divided as follows:
a history of the organization and service of the regiment
followed by muster rolls for each of the following groups:
Field and Staff Officers, Regimental Band (if any), the
Companies (starting with Company A), and Unassigned Man/
Men (if any).

To jump forward or backward in the Regiment section, there
is a drop down menu of page numbers in the upper right-
hand corner of each page. If you want to download any
text, there is a drop down menu in the upper left-hand
corner that allows you to view each page as either Text,
Image or PDF. The abbreviations Dr. Bates used appear
at the beginning of each volume.

Once inside one of the Volumes, you can used the
U/Michigan's Search feature to look for names, etc.

You may find the Preface in Volume I of interest.
In it, Dr. Bates explains the difficulties he encountered
in putting this massive work together.

Before you go to Bates on-line, you might want to check
my Regiment section. I have several hundred muster rolls
for the PA Regiments already transcribed and on-line.

Hope this helps,
Alice Gayley
