Hi Alice: Yes, I've heard the stories about being "over 18", and I know some
of the drummer boys entered the army at around 14 or15, and later became
regular soldiers. I don't imagine the reqruiters were concerned too muck
about "accuracy" either, as bad as they needed troops, and many of the boys
"joined up" with there older brothers, both Union & Confederate. It was a
terrible war, and the carnage was
worse, when we consider that Americans were fighting Americans. It's sad that
so many of our school-age youth, have little knowledge of the sacrafice, and
the history of this war, (I was a combat vet of WWII, and their knowledge of
that war is minimal).
I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your knowledgable assistance
to other
list members, on a regular basis. Lew in Co.
