As perhaps a measure of hope of finding such old records, let me relate an
experience I had in searching for the great-great grandfather of my sons
(their father and I are divorced). The man's name was very common - Charles
Moore. I knew he was born in 1868 and had lived in an orphanage in the
Germantown, Phila. area. The orphanage had, of course, long since shut
down. Through months of on and off again searching on the Internet I found
a reference to a Lutheran Children's Home in Germantown. More searching
here and there found a reference that it was now a school. So I wrote to
the school and, voila! they indeed had the records from the orphanage and
kindly looked up the information I needed. So don't give up to hastily!
