Tredyffrin is in the Great Valley, in the most easterly part of the
county, and part of a large tract which was surveyed for the Welsh, and was
mainly settled by them. The name is Welsh and means "valley town"; Tre or
Tref is the Welsh for town and Dyffrin is "a wide cultivated valley". It is
sometimes referred to as Valleytown or Valleyton in old writings; for
instance a deed from Lewis Walker to Llewllyn David, in 1708, states that
the grantor is "of the township of Valleytown."
The date of the organization of the township is not known, but it was
prior to the year 1707, for that was the year it is known that Thomas David
was the township constable. In 1722 the following names were listed as
resident land-owners;

Morris David
Hugh David
James David, Sr
