The Black Horse Tavern was also known as the Black Horse Inn and the Black
Horse Hotel during different times in history. By the dawn of the 20th
century, my cousin, Alan Cuningham (one 'n') and his wife, the former Ethel
Pusey, were living there. I have the impression that they had turned it into
a private residence and extensively remodeled it around 1915. Following
their deaths, I believe it was purchased by the State and used as a State
Motor Patrol barracks during the 1920's and 1930's.

Alas, its location at the intersection of Middletown Road and Baltimore Pike
was its downfall. When the state improved route 1 in the 1930's, it was in
the middle of a planned cloverleaf. Because of its size and encirclement by
large oak and maple trees, it was deemed too expensive to move. It was
demolished in 1939.
