To clarify, Penn himself, in the letter as quoted, never used the term
"native American"......that is an insert of the person citing the quote.
Once again, in our effort to be politically correct, we are muddling
history.

Yvonne,
Thank you for posting the Penn letter, I found it most interesting. It
would appear to me that the Botanical site has mis-stated the date of the
letter. Their letter is dated Aug. 16, 1663 and the letter you refer to is
dated Aug. 16, 1683. It also appears that Penn was indeed referring to the
Indians when he referred to native Americans and not to any American born
off spring of Europeons who came to America. The letter also states that
the Swedes are "plain, ftrong, induftrious People, yet have made no great
progrefs in Culture or propagation of Fruit-Trees", which says to me he
certainly wasn't talking about peach trees on the Swede's plantations.
I have written a note to the gentleman at the Botanical site asking him for
a clearer reference to the letter of 1663 that he refers to. I also noticed
at the top of his site he has it noted as a "draft" time line and a work in
progress, which may mean it was not proof read nor edited yet and could
change as it progresses.
