Ed,
Lydia's marriage was indeed recorded at Deer Creek MM. "The Coale Family,
Nine Generations, Vol. I; 1569-1955", by Willis Branson Coale, Johnson Press,
Inc., Pontiac, Illinois, 1976, p. 71 has a reproduction of the marriage
certificate. I'm not the greatest at reading old signatures and my xerox is
not great but here is the caption under the certificate:
"Samuel (Coale) was taking as wife, a young woman of eighteen, who had
formerly lived in Chester County, southeastern Pennsylvania. The wedding
took place at a Friends meeting. Present were twenty-one persons who signed
as witnesses. Close relatives of Samuel included Skipwith Coale, a brother;
Elizabeth, second wife of a brother, William Coale; James Rigbie, a cousin;
and Philip Coale (could this be Philip 'Cole'?), a brother. Seven relatives
of Lydia were in the company. Samuel's mother, Margaret, seems to have been
still living; but she could not attend, perhaps because of her age."
The Pusey relations that I can discern include:
Elizabeth Smith, Lydia's oldest sister.
Mary Husband, Lydia's second oldest sister, and a longtime member of Deer
Creek (the book strongly suggests that she was responsible for the bride and
groom meeting each other)
Joseph Husband, Lydia's brother-in-law
Hannah Harvey, Lydia's fifth-oldest sister
Amos Harvey, Lydia's brother-in-law (I wouldn't swear to this signature)
Lewis Pusey, Lydia's youngest brother (the 10th, or second-to-last child of
Joshua Pusey and Mary Lewis).
That makes six.
The seventh Pusey relative might be the one with the worst handwriting ;-)
The first name looks like John and the last name might be Pusey. But, Lydia
did not have a brother named John. Her Uncle John had been dead for 10
years, so that leaves her 13 year old nephew, son of brother Ellis, or
40-year-old cousin John, son of John Pusey and Katherine Maris. Or, perhaps
I've misread it and the person is actually her brother Joshua. He did marry
his last wife, Hannah Lea (the widow Canby) in Cecil County six years later
(1782)...
Probably have to compare to some of the known Pusey signatures to be certain.
John
