Based on the research of Bernice Olsem, a careful researcher, now deceased,I can tell you what I little I know about my ancestor, Thomas Dell.

Thomas Dell, b. Bucks Co, England
d 6 mo 22 da 1750 Ridley Twp Chester Co.
m 5 mo 22 da 1691 Reading, Bucks Co, England, Mary Eldershaw dau Thomas and Mary Eldershaw of Berkshire England. She d 9 mo 11 da 1791, Chester Co PA.

Their children (all born in England):
1. Mary b 31 da 5 mo 1695
2. Elizabeth (my ancestor) b 1 da 6 mo 1697 m New Garden Chester Co PA 29 da 7 mo 1720 William Swayne son of Francis and Elizabeth Milton Swayne d 2 mo 1743
3. Sarah Dell b 11 da 6 mo 1699 d 27 da 7 mo 1714/1715 unmarried
4. Thomas Dell Jr. b 29 da 9 mo 1701 m 7 da 8 mo 1728 Rachel dau James and Mary Sharpless
5. Edward Dell b 24 da 2 mo 1704 d 20 da 5 mo 1704

Thomas Dell came to Chester Monthly Meeting 27 da 10 mo 1708 from Berkshire, England. All children pre-deceased him. He was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dell of Berkshire.

I have a transcript of his will, in which he leaves to his wife "all my houses land of plantation where I now dwell and which I now am in possession of to hold to her my said dear wife during her natural life without impeachment of wa[illegible] and from and immediately after her decease I devise and bequeath the same land and premises unto my grandsons Thomas and Samuel Swaine [sic] to hold to them for and [illegible] the term of twenty-five years and at the expiration of said term I devise the same land and premises to my granddaughters Sarah and Mary Dell children of my son Thomas deceased, to be equally divided between them and to the heirs of thine bodies lawfully begotten but for want of such heirs then my mind and will is that the said land and premises descend to my grandchildren of my daughter Elizabeth Swaine deceased to be equally divided between them to hold to them and their respective heirs and assigns forthwith.

There is more, but it is pretty certain that Thomas had no male heirs by the name of Dell.

Thomas is mentioned once in the index of Futhey and Cope, but no other Dell is listed. His signature was on a petition regarding the Maryland-Pennsylvania boundary dispute.

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help!

Maggie

Hello Maggie,

I too am on the Chester co list and Berks co. I noticed you also were working on the Dell family. My 3 gr grandmother was a Mary Dell born 11 April 1800 died 23 April 1885. She married Peter Bruch , they lived in Turbotville, Northumberland co., Pa. Her father was Ephraim Dell and wife Catherine. I estimate Ephraim Dell to be born abt.1775 or so. They may have come from Chester co or Berks co. I do know the Dell's originally came from England.

Might you have any of these names in your files or be able to offer suggestions?

Thank You Much,

Pat Uffenorde ( Issaquah, Wa. )
