Before 1738, the citizens what was to become Newlin were assessed as part of Marlborough or Bradford, according to whether they were on the north or south side of the Brandywine. In 1740 the inhabitants petitioned to be formed into a township, which was granted, and the township named Newlin ( sometimes written as Newlinton). The following is what was called, in 1739, the Society rate" in the assessment, the last before the formation of Newlin Twp.
