A fellow list member sent this, concerning her own research, which is sure interesting, AND illustrates the problem with spellings, especially those with a 'foreign twist'! ( I still vote for the Germanic ones as being the worst!!)

The name Supplee is still well known in the Philadelphia area (dairy still in business?) While the "American" line is fairly well documented, our fellow list member has been trying to find something to go on in France where his "de Saint-Souplis" family was known in Abbeville, Picardie. He had to drop his minor title "de Saint" when he fled the Huguenot persecution. c1670. Now she is trying to gather more info in France, and has run into these variations - - - (and doesn't think this is ALL of 'em !!!!)

Souply, Sulpice, Souplis, Souplix, Souplet, Soupplet, Sulpie, Sulpis, Sulpy, Suplie, Suply, Supplice, Supply, Suppli, Supplie, Supplis AND Diminutives: Supligeon, Suplisson, Suppliciau, Suppligeau, Suppligeot, Supplissieu, Supplission. Also there is mention that there may have been a German branch, which would have been known as Kouplis.

Another list member wrote that she couldn't find an ancestor in the census, till she realized that the census taker had dropped the first given name, which was an odd one and probably one he was totally unfamiliar with, and styled her ancestor by his middle name ...so, that's something to think about, when you know the middle name of an ancestor - perhaps to be on the look out for him by that middle name only. This sort of thing is a good example, thought, of the importance of looking at the census records themselves, rather than just a written copy of them, or even worse, those from Ancestry, etc. If viewing the actual records you have the oportunity of looking for other spellings, and possibilities, seen in relation to other family members listed, neighbors, etc, and judge for yourself....
