PASSMORE, ANDREW M.
Obituary appeared in the Oxford Press dated after 11
March 1883. A copy of the obituary was located in the
newspaper clipping file at the Chester County
Historical Society.
Little Andrew has Gone.
On the 11th of the 3d month, 1883, little Andrew
M. Passmore, son of George B. and Lizzie B. Passmore,
passed away from this world to the brighter and better
one. He was eight and a half years old, lacking two
days; and yet he had impressed the sweetness of his
young, gentle, and sweet spirit upon the hearts of a
large circle of friends. And it may truly be said of
him that he was no ordinary child, in many respects.
Never impatient, ever sweet and gentle, he could
always be controlled by reason and kind words, to
which he would listen as if he had been matured and
thoughtful years. And at once he would act according
to reason, though it involved the surrender of his own
sports and pastimes.
With this he had courtesy of the true gentleman,
speaking delicately and kindly to his playmates, to
the old and the young inviting no undue familiarity
and showing no spirit of insolence or pride. His
little hand never struck a little fellow, and his mild
lips never utter a reproach against one.
After the opening of Friends' Meeting here, he
always, to the time of his passage into the real
world, had an interest in the First Day School and the
meetings, and he would listen as others quite beyond
his years.
He used to derive recitations from Scattered
Seeds, repeating them with much interest and pleasure.
Scrupulous and conscientious in school, he would
have been no less marked there, and at his age, he
could write with both hands, making the letters in the
usual form.
His funeral was largely attended, and during the
discourse; there were but few eyes present that did
not attest their love for the child and sympathy for
the sorrowing family.
After the sweet spirit had gone, the casket
itself, looking more like wax that unanimated flesh,
bore the impress of the gentle soul that had for a
time dwelt in it. But little Andrew is not dead. He
had only left the little house of flesh in which for
eight and a half years he sojourned among the things
of time. He has but reached the goal of being earlier
than many others; there to await the coming of those
he loved and those that loved him.
