Don't kid yourself that these things are always done on the 'up and
up'....most everyone involved in genealogy for any length of time knows at
least one horror story! My own great great grandparents were buried in a
certain cemetery......years later the 'hard' road was widened and the
graves on the road side (the older ones) were 'supposedly' moved to another
municipal cemetery. However, when I searched for them they were neither in
the old cementery or, moved, to the new one. I was bemoaing this at the
local genealogical library, and an 'old timer' said "next time you're there,
look over the back of the hill. You'll see where they simply threw a lot of
the older headstones, figuring that no one was left alive to care...and then
simply plowed the graves under for the road. " I did look the next time I
was visiting the area and you could, indeed, see pieces of headstones
sticking out of the dirt and underbrush, where they had been thrown. . A
friend told me about a small church with accompanying grave yard that was
abandonded - a local farmer simply 'took' the headstones and made them into
a fence for his property! The dead are at the mercy of the living, often,
NOT a good place to be!
