As with all spelling of this timeframe, what we generally have access to
are records......and, records do not, in any way, represent the way an
individual spelled his or her name....what records show is how the clerk who
compiled the record spelled it. Thus, as we have said many times before,
the only way to know how an individual spelled his or her name is to find
their signature!
To my knowledge there was no Quaker spelling of any name......and, as
to when the various spellings of the name began to include Phoebe, I don't
really know....but, it would be interesting TO know, though....I have a few
Phebes myself. I do know the origin was in Greek mythology, and it's
biblical to, I believe.

"Also, even though the data I have spells her name Phoebe, would not the
Quaker spelling be Phebe as you (Candy) have it in the "Plain Language"
source? I don't believe that the Phoebe spelling was used by Quakers in
1700's. Does anyone know about this?
