Is this the same James Smith? I ask, as the date is the same - 1785. This
isn't a will, but adm. papers...but, they might hold some info for you...you
just never know. Sometimes family members sign the papers as indication
that they 'agree' with the distribution mandated by the court.

Berks Co;
SMITH, JAMES, Douglass.March 12, 1785.Adm. to Thomas WALKER, a friend.

(an interesting aside for this is that a John P. SMith was a dEputy Register
of Berks Co, and he translated the German records....which, surprised me for
a John Smith)

Chester Co...(year close to the one you give, and with a son named
James....so, thought I'd include it, just in case )

Hi: I am a "new" member who was on the list several years ago. I may have
been dropped when I changed my e-mail address.

My interest is in Gideon SMITH, who was a son of James Smith (1719-1785)
the son of John (1686-1765) and Susannah Mary Smith (1691-1767) who
emigrated
> in 1720 from N. Ireland to Chester County. Gideon's mother was Sarah
> Wilson> (1724-1812), daughter of Hugh Wilson (d. 1725) and Ann ? Wilson. A
> brother of Sarah was named Gideon Wilson (1702-1790).

Susannah Smith (1721-1796), sister of James and aunt of Gideon, married
Thomas Armstrong (1705-1782).According to the James Harris history "The
Smith Family" descended from John Smith (1906), Gideon first married his
cousin Susannah Armstrong, daughter of Thomas and Susannah. The history
concludes that Gideon died before Susannah as her tombstone at Fagg's Manor
says she is "relict" of Gideon. However, as a descendant of Gideon and his
second wife Elizabeth, I know this is not true. (See below). I can find no
clues at all to the identity of Gideon's second wife Elizabeth. I suspect
she may have been a Boyd because they named a son William Boyd Smith and
there are two William Boyd Smiths in the next generation. I don't know if
Gideon had a son named Gideon Wilson Smith, but a Gideon Wilson Smith died
in 1813 when both he and Gideon were living in Union County, PA. Letters of
administration are signed by Gideon Smith and his sons William Boyd and John
are executors. I also don't know if Gideon himself had Wilson as a middle
name. He did not indicate that, nor did he mention family, in his
application for a Rev. War pension.
