Robert William was a widower when he married Gwen Cadwalader at the house of
Hugh Roberts 4-19-1691. . About 1700 they moved to Goshen, probably on the
land then of Griffith Owen, at or near the Goshen Meeting house. He was
sometimes called the King of Goshen, and it is claimed that he was the first
settler in the twp..... the first of the Goshen meetings was held at.
Robert's house. Tradition says their first residence was a cave. Though
he had considerable land in Goshen he appears to have been in straitened
circumstances, and the Haverford Friends contributed 19 lb+ to build him a
new house. In 1710 Edward Roberts complained of him for debt, and the
meeting advised him to sell some of his land to pay it, and even appointed
persons to assist him doing it. He died in 1734, at the age of 87.
His children were Elizabeth; Ellis; Lewis; John; Ann; William; Grace;
Hannah; Sarah....there is much more on the family, in Futhey and Cope...
from early court records;
Robert William served as the supervision of the highways of Goshen, in 1706.
in 1710 Robert was the defendant in a case brought by Hugh Pugh...the
defendant was called but did not appear and bail bond was assigned....(no
mention of the what the complaint against him was)...the case was to be
continued,but my court records book ends with this year, so for more info,
one will have to look in the next book of records.
