Janice,

And I will take this same or similar trip next year! Please, keep a log of
where you went and how you travelled plus any comments, such as tolls, fees,
etc. Perhaps there are many folks, like me, who could use the advantage of
your experience,

I do know that if you have a Medicare Card, you may ride the Public
Transport for $1.00, and that you can get to almost anywhere on Public
Transport! We were laid over a few days on a UselesS Air flight from San
Francisco to Lisboa last year due to (supposedly) rain.

And, even on Public Transport, a handheld GPS is handy -- there are some now
on the internet for less that $200.00

Some experienced advice on walking around in any densely populated areas -
- plan you trip before your go out
- don't go out with any more cash than you need (ATMs work everywhere)
- keep only your cash in one pocket with a heavy money clip, large bills on
the outside - don't display it, ever
- if accosted, consider to throw the cash to one side and run in the other
direction
- keep your coin holder & your cash separate
- & only one credit card, unsigned with a photo on it,
- dress down, carry a slicker not an umbrella - wear the slicker if it is
not too hot (no one can be sure what is under it)
- walk more towards your toes instead of your heels,
- don't wear any jewellery except a cheap watch if necessary, keep it hidden
- a backpack is a like flag which encourages being accosted
- use a strong over-the-shoulder (sea) bag made of leather (because it is
harder to slice quickly)
- & keep your stuff in the bag, carry as little as necessary, only what you
are willing to lose
- swing it around and across your chest if you must approach a crowd - stay
on the edge
- use your GPS (IPOD etc) inside your sea bag
- keep close attention of what is happening around you and anticipate
- change directions occasionally for no good reason
- don't respond in any manner to any comments nor questions from strangers
- and do not casually talk about where you are going nor where you have
been (prevent being profiled)
