Subject: Meaning of "r" in city directory
Date: Mon, 6 May 2002 01:33:19 -0700 (PDT)

Thanks to all of you for your responses to my question on the meaning of "r" in the McElroy's City Directory listings. I wish there had been unanimous agreement, however. Many said the "r" stands for "rear" meaning the person lived in the rear part of the building. Lani sent me a list of abbreviations from a later city directory in which the "r" did stand for "rear."

Other suggestions for the meaning were: residence, renter, and right side or right corner near American.

Since this residence stayed in the family until at least 1920, I believe it was owned and not rented by Wm. Welsh. I think I'll go with "rear" for now, for at times his daughter's family also lived there.

Thanks again for your help. This is a GREAT list!!!
