My ancestors in Manayunk were James I. Quinn 1st (my great-grandfather who
was a blacksmith on Main st.) His son James 2nd dob 1889 on Umbria St, and
daughter Annie Quinn (later Dooley)
James 2nd's children by 1st marriage in 1919 to Katherine (maiden name
Quinn!) Katherine and I believe Margaret) 1st wife died around 1928.
Married Catherine Leamon dob 1900 in 1929 had my mother Marion 12/23/30 then
Anna in 1934 then James 3rd 1942. Lived on upper Smick st in the red brick
rowhouse my mother showed me across from Germany hill (I dont know the
adress)
There is a photo of her in the Daily News 10/23(?)/32 eating bread from a
community oven built into the side of the hill at the corner of Smick and
(?) to feed the poor. Her father worked at the Manayunk Plush Co. which was
padlocked. The watchman let him grow fruit and vegetables on the property so
to feed his family.
On my fathers side Patrick Lawlor moved to East Falls from upstate and
married Helen McDevitt I think in 1918, had a family and moved to Shawmont
to 7800 Nixon St. around 1934. The house or what's left of it is a storage
shed for a newer house on the property and has been cut down to one floor. I
have recordings that my father made from the window of this house in 1947/48
of the steam engines blowing for the Port Royal Ave crossing! I would love
to approach the currant owners but I havn't the nerve. ANYWAY.....after
Pat's death on the Reading in 1944, the family moved to 4642 Canton St and
they were...Helen and her sons Bill, Charles, John, Joe, Frank (currently of
Henry Ave, East Falls, maried to ex-Manayunker Mary Leahey) Thomas and
Bernice. I believe Charles is living in Calif. and Bernice in S.Phila. The
rest are deceased.
Well you asked. It was fun.
Jim Lawlor
