Erasmus WILSON, "The Quiet Observer" of the Pittsburgh Gazette Times, is
dead at the age of nearly 80 years. He was a soldier in the Civil war. His
ancestors were Quakers. For a time he was employed on a newspaper in
Washington, this county. He went to Pittsburgh and in turn worked on the
Leader, the Dispatch and the Gazette-Times. On the latter paper he
conducted the "Quiet Observer" column for 3* years until his death.
Mr. WILSON was married in Washington in 1876 to Jeannette MACAUKEY of
Pittsburgh. She was an invalid for many years. A daughter was born to
them, but lived only a short time.
In addition to his newspaper writing, Mr. WILSON was known as the author of
several books bearing on the history of Pittsburgh and environs. He was
allied with many welfare and municipal governments having for their purpose
the ______ and advancement of the______ and the training of boys and girls.
He helped to organize the Boy Scout troop in McDonald some years ago and was
a visitor here on several occasions. At the funeral exercises on Tuesday a
guard of Eagle Rank Boy Scouts and other scout ranks were represented on
account of Mr. WILSON being the president emeritus of the Allegheny County
Boy Scout organizations and known in the aboriginal vernacular as "Chief
White Pine."
