WILLIAMS, SPEER, VELPER, SHAFFER, MCCUTCHEON, PETTIBON, ELY, FULLERTON,
SHARP
Word was received on Wednesday by D. C. KIRK, superintendent of Robinson's
Run cemetery, that F. Hudson WILLIAMS, a former resident of McDonald, had
died suddenly on Monday, April 12, 1943, in Philadelphia, and that the body
would be brought to the Frank W. SIMMONS Funeral home, Perrysville avenue,
Northside, Pittsburgh, where services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Robinson's Run cemetery.
Mr. WILLIAMS and his family moved from McDonald to Philadelphia bout twenty
years ago when his employer, the Pennsylvania railroad moved its offices
from Pittsburgh to the Quaker City.
Ernest Speer, 19, of R. D. 2, Burgettstown, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday,
April 10, 1943, in the Norfolk Naval hospital, Portsmouth, Va., following a
lingering illness.
A son of Fred and Bertha MILLER SPEER, he was born June 16, 1924 in Beaver
Falls, and attended Union high school, Burgettstown.
Besides his parents, he is survived by five brothers: Francis of Ingram,
Ross of Sheraden, and Harold, Fred, Jr., and William, all at home, and a
sister, Esther, at home. He is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. William SPEER of
Noblestown. A sister, Hilda, Preceded him in death.
Funeral services are being held this Thursday afternoon in the Marshall
Funeral home, Oakdale. Burial in the Oakdale cemetery.
Frank VELPER, 71, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 9, 1943, in his home in
Champion hill, following a lingering illness.
He was born August 12, 1871, in Czechoslovakia and had been a resident of
the United States the greater part of his life. He was a member of the
Eagles lodge, Sturgeon.
He is survived by his wife, Anna PETROSKY VELPER; two sons: Frank VELPER,
Jr., and Michael VELPER, both of Sturgeon; three daughters: Mrs. Joseph
VERCEK of Strabane and Mrs. Leo RITTER and Mrs. Joseph MASSARO, both of
Noblestown. There are 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday morning in the VELPER home. Burial was
in Robinson's Run cemetery.
George William SHAFFER, 59, died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1943, in
his home near Midway following a lingering illness.
He was born October 20, 1883, at Candor, the son of George and Elizabeth
SIEMON SHAFFER. On September 4, 1912, he was married at Danville, PA, to
Rose BYERLY, who died December 2, 1919.
Mr. SHAFFER was a member of the Center United Presbyterian church, Midway,
and was a farmer in the vicinity until his ill health forced him to retire a
number of years ago.
He is survived by a son, George L. SHAFFER of Bloomington, Ind., and a
daughter Margaret, at home.
Funeral services are being held this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the Wilson
funeral home, Midway, in charge of Dr. S. A. MCCOLLAM, pastor of the First
United Presbyterian church, McDonald. Burial will be private Friday at 10
a.m. in the Raccoon cemetery at Candor.
Claudius R. MCCUTCHEON, 85, of Candor, died April 7, 1943, at 3:00 p.m. at
his home at Candor, R. D. 1, Bulger, Pa. He was born February 18, 1858, in
Old Allegheny City, now Northside, Pittsburgh.
Mr. MCCUTCHEON had resided in Candor for 58 years. He was a blacksmith,
and worked at his trade up until five years ago, when he suffered a heart
attack, of which he never fully recovered. He learned his trade at the
ADAMS blacksmith shop at Gayly, worked for A. H. LONG of Manchester,
Northside, Pittsburgh, also had a shop in Imperial before coming to Candor
in 1885. He was a life-long Republican and never missed but one
Presidential election since he was 21. He was a member of Raccoon
Presbyterian church at Candor.
He is survived by one daughter: Tillie MCCUTCHEON SMYERS, wife of
Alexander M. SMYERS of Candor, and three grandchildren-Pvt. Francis
MCCUTCHEON of Washington, D. C., now with the Medical corps at Camp Hale,
Colo.; Paul MCCUTCHEON, Cleveland, and Mrs. Betty MCCUTCHEON WADE, at home.
There are two sisters-Mrs. Sadie HARRIS of Burlington, N. J., and Mrs. Ella
COOL of Hadley, Mercer county, and one brother, William of Newton Falls,
Ohio.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the SMYERS home, conducted
by the Rev. George H. BUCHER, pastor of the Raccoon Presbyterian church,
assisted by the Rev. Will BINGHAM and the Rev. Samuel G. NEAL. Burial was
in the Candor cemetery.
Mrs. Eleanor Jean KELLY PETTIBON, 23, of Oakdale died at 2:15 a.m. Friday,
April 9, 1943, in the Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, following a three-month
illness.
A daughter of William A. and Nell MARTIN KELLY, she was born January 21,
1920, in Bellevue, and came to Oakdale with her parents at the age of
twelve. She was a member of the Oakdale Presbyterian church.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Everett PETTIBON; a
daughter, Gloria Jean, aged 3; four sisters: Ann, the wife of Ralph HENNON
of Ingram, and Virginia, Patricia, and Nancy KELLY, all three at home; three
brothers: Pfc. William KELLY, stationed at Camp GREUBER, Okla., and Richard
and Bert KELLY at home. A brother David died four years ago.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Kelly home, conducted by
the Rev. W. R. MCMUNN, D. D. Burial was in Robinson's Run cemetery.
Thomas ELY, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis ELY of R. D. 4, McDonald, died
Tuesday morning April 12, 1943 in the Canonsburg hospital of pneumonia. He
was born March 26, 1943.
Besides his parents, he is survived by four brothers and sisters, Arlene,
Naomi, Laloni, and Lewis, Jr.; his grandfather, August BOLLINGER of
Bridgeville, his grandmother, Mrs. Julia ELY of R. D. 4, McDonald.
Funeral services are being held this Thursday afternoon in the ELY home.
Miss Maggie M. FULLERTON, 83, diet at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1943,
in the home of her cousin, E. O. FULLERTON, 208 North street, McDonald.
She was born August 9, 1859, on a farm near Florence, Hanover township, the
daughter of John and Margaret HOOD FULLERTON. At the age of 15 she and her
mother moved to Frankfort Springs, where she resided until three years ago
when, owing to failing health she came to McDonald to make her home with her
cousin. She was a member of the Frankfort Springs Presbyterian church.
Funeral services are being held this Thursday afternoon in the Frankfort
Springs Presbyterian church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Dr. R. L. BIDDLE.
Burial in Grandview cemetery, Florence.
Mrs. Jane Reed SHARP, 93, died Thursday morning, April 1, 1943, in her home
in Midway. She fell and broke her hip and died the same week.
A daughter of Samuel and Eliza HOGUE BERLIN, she was born October 2, 1849,
in Hanover, Beaver county. She and William SHARP were married 58 years ago.
Mrs. SHARP had been a member of the Second United Presbyterian church,
Burgettstown, for a number of years.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George MUMPER
of Midway, and Mrs. James MUMPER of Akron, Ohio. There are 16 grandchildren
and 15 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Alice CRAWFORD preceded her in
death.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Wilson's Funeral home,
Midway, conducted by Dr. R. M. BLACKWOOD of Corliss, assisted by the rev
Philip W. HORNE, pastor of the Midway Baptist church. Burial was in
Grandview cemetery, Florence.
