SIMEK, SMITH, CUBBON, VANCE, FULLUM, MURPHY
Frank SIMEK, 53, died suddenly at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, September 2,
1935, in his home in Candor.
Mr. SIMEK was born in Austria, coming to America at the age of 17 years.
He lived in Walkers Mills for a time, but since then had lived in Candor.
For 24 years he had been employed by the Peoples Natural Gas Co.
June 11, 1917, he married Marie WARNER BORDY, who survives, with two
daughters, Rita, 17, and Regina, 15, at home. He so leaves a stepdaughter,
Cecelia BORDY, and a son Gerard BORDY, both at home.
Funeral services are being held this Thursday afternoon in the Raccoon
Presbyterian church at Candor, in charge of the Rev. Samuel NEAL, of the
Hebron Presbyterian church. Burial in the Candor cemetery.
Mrs. Jane Martin SMITH, 69, wife of William SMITH, died at 12:10 a.m.,
Monday, September 2, 1935, in her home in the Westend, McDonald.
Mrs. SMITH was born in Sharon, Ohio. On November 3, 1882 she was united in
marriage with Mr. SMITH, the marriage taking place in McDonald. She was a
life-long resident of McDonald and was a member of the First U. P. church.
She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. Jane KEHM
and Mrs. Anna HEASLEY of Heidelberg, William SMITH of Ohio, Robert SMITH of
Cecil, Mrs. Phoebe DEICHLER, Mrs. Ellen KLIMAS, Mrs. Mary SEAGALE, Alex
SMITH, Daniel SMITH, and Harry SMTIH of McDonald, and Miss Martha SMITH at
home. Four sisters and one brother also survive. They are: Mrs.
Elizabeth SMITH of Youngstown, Ohio, Mrs. Phoebe WELCH of Pittsburgh, Mrs.
Mary MOULDEN of Southview, Mrs. Hanna MILLER of Canonsburg, and Harry MARTIN
of Jacksonburg, W. Va.
There are 54 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon in the home conducted by
the Rev. R. T. CAMPBELL, D. D., of the Robinson's Run church. Burial was in
the Venice cemetery.
Mrs. Stella M. (HASTINGS) CUBBON died in her home in Shinnston, W. Va.,
Friday, August 23, 1935, aged 59 years, 10 months and 24 days.
The deceased was born September 30, 1875, in South Fayette township,
Allegheny county. She was united in marriage with Eugene H. CUBBON who
survives her with their family. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs.
Louis S. GOEHRING of Wilkinsburg.
Mrs. CUBBON was a daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (HANNA) HASTINGS. Her
father was born in 1826, near Hastings Station, South Fayette township,
Allegheny county. On November 13, 1851, he married Elizabeth HANNA,
daughter of John HANNA, and to this union were born, Anna Jane, Ada, Mary
E., Henry, William, John, Frank, Lawrence, Emma, Flora, and Stella M. Mrs.
CUBBON's father died in 1880. He was for a long time a resident of
McDonald.
Her paternal grandfather, William HASTINGS, Sr., was born in 1788, in
Shenandoah county, Virginia. When 10 years of age he crossed the Allegheny
mountains with his father and settled in South Fayette township. In 1811 he
married Mary IRWIN, daughter of John Irwin, Sr. of Cecil township, and to
this union were born fourteen children, seven sons and seven daughters:
John, Ebenezer, James, Ursula, Margaret and Elizabeth, twins, William M.,
Levi Gregg, Henry Irwin, Daniel, Euphemia, Harriet, Margery, and Mary. On
April 2, 1836, he purchased a farm lying partly in South Fayette and partly
in Upper St. Clair township, where he carried on agricultural pursuits for
33 years. He departed this life on his own farm at Hastings Station, August
1859, aged 81 years.
The paternal great-grandfather, Daniel HASTINGS, Sr., was born in the year
1743. In early life he resided in Shenandoah county, Va. He married and
to this union were born John, Samuel, James, Mary, Daniel, Jr., Thomas, and
William. In the year 1798 he and his wife Margaret and seven children,
crossed the Allegheny mountains by wagon and settled in South Fayette
township, Allegheny county. On February 4, 1799, he purchased from Thomas
SWEARINGEN a tract of land containing 201 1/2 acres, which was formerly
described as being situated in Yohogania county, Va., but now known to lay
on the waters of Coalpit run, a branch of Chartiers creek. He departed his
life in 1807, aged 64 years.
Mrs. CUBBON was well known by the older residents of McDonald and vicinity.
She is sadly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services were held
Sunday afternoon, August 25. Burial was at Shinnston, W. Va.
Clyde VANCE, 46, well-known farmer of the Bavington district, died in the
home of his brothers, R. F. and W. D. VANCE at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, September
1, 1935 after an illness caused by a brain tumor.
Born in 1889 at King's Creek, he was a son of Charles S. and Rebecca WILSON
VANCE, both deceased. His father was born in Wigtownshire, Scotland, and
his mother near Bavington. Mr. VANCE was a member of the Burgettstown
grange. He first united with the King's Creek United Presbyterian church
and transferred to Robins U. P. church upon his removal to this locality 18
years ago.
A third brother, Clark C. VANCE of Crafton also survives.
Funeral services were held in the Robinson U. P. church Tuesday afternoon
conducted by the Rev. J. Walter IRWIN. Burial was in the church cemetery.
A head injury he suffered seven years ago an which in all that time had
caused him no pain on Sunday morning, September 1, 1935, caused the death of
Hugh FULLUM, 28, of R. D. 4, McDonald, in the Allegheny General hospital.
FULLUM suffered a fractured skull seven years ago when he was struck by a
branch of a tree he was cutting down. A silver plate was placed in his
skull following an operation. He had been ill one week.
His home was in Cecil township near Venice. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.
S. FULLUM, and the following brothers and sisters survive; Martha of
Pittsburgh, Clara of Wilkinsburg, Mrs. Malinda MYERS of Washington, Malissa
of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Sara DEMPSTER of Cecil, Mrs. Ada DAVIS of Bellevue,
Wilbert, at home, Delbert of Cecil, Melvin of Washington, and Lem of Cecil.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Payne AME church,
Canonsburg, in charge of the Rev. G. W. WILLIAMS. Burial was at West
Middletown.
James B. MURPHY, 77, retired locomotive engineer of the Pennsylvania, died
Monday, September 2, 1935-his birthday.
Mr. MURPHY had maintained his home on the Burgettstown-Florence road for
many years. He retired seven years ago after long service on the railroad.
