Mrs. Mary Jane PATTERSON PURDY, wife of Robert PURDY, Sr., died at her home
in North McDonald street at 9:50 o'clock Saturday morning, October 20, 1917,
after a week's illness of pneumonia. Her death occurred on her 76th
birthday. Until her last illness Mrs. PURDY was in good health and was able
to go about her work.
Mary Jane PATTERSON was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, October 20, 1941.
On January 1, 1860, she was united in marriage with Robert PURDY. They came
to America about fifty-five years ago, locating then at West Middletown.
They had resided in McDonald over forty years.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. PURDY. Two daughters died when
small. Another daughter, Mrs. Hugh MALARKY, died in McDonald about eleven
years ago. Mr. PURDY survives with three sons, Thomas PURDY of Midway,
Robert and John PURDY of McDonald. There are also eighteen grandchildren
and fourteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. PURDY was a member of the
Episcopalian church.
Funeral services were held at the late home on Monday afternoon in charge
of the Rev. W. D. IRONS, D. D., pastor of the First United Presbyterian
Church of McDonald. Interment was in Robinson's Run cemetery.
Clarence W. SCHWARTZ, aged 25 years, died at his home at Dormont at 6:15 o'
clock Tuesday evening, October 23, 1917, after two weeks' illness of
tonsillitis and blood poisoning.
Mr. SCHWARTZ was born in Pittsburg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas
SCHWARTZ. He was employed by the Colonial Trust Company. On June 15, 1915,
Mr. SCHWARTZ was united in marriage with Miss Ida LEWIS, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Benjamin LEWIS of McDonald. His wife survives, also his parents, three
sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock at the
late home, 1474 Fairlawn avenue, Dormont, conducted by the Rev. Dr. W. D.
IRONS of McDonald. Interment will be in the Oakland cemetery.
Friends from McDonald attending the funeral are requested to take car No.
42 at Smithfield street, Pittsburgh.
James J. WIBLE, age 70 years, died very suddenly at his home at Oakdale, on
Wednesday morning, October 24, 1917, at 11:45 o'clock. Death was due to a
heart failure. Mr. WIBLE had shoveled snow from the walks and had taken a
morning walk downtown.
Mr. WIBLE was born in Shaler township, Allegheny County. He conducted
undertaking establishments at Oakdale and Millvale. He was a veteran of the
Spanish-American War, and was a lieutenant in Company C., Fourteenth
Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guards. In 1874 Mr. WIBLE was united in
marriage with Miss Elizabeth JOHNSON, who survives with two daughters, Mrs.
Taylor, wife of Dr. John P. TAYLOR of McDonald, and Mrs. John J. WILT of
Bakersfield, Calif. Five grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters also
survive.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Mrs. Sara KELSO, widow of the late George KELSO, of Cecil township, died on
Thursday, October 18, 1917. Mrs. KELSO before her marriage was Miss
WALLACE, a sister of the late Rev. Dr. A. G. WALLACE, for many years one of
the most prominent ministers of the United Presbyterian Church. She was
born near Bridgeville. Five sons survive: W. W. KELSO of Cecil, John A.
KELSO of McKeesport, George A., James L., and B. M. KELSO, of Canonsburg.
Mrs. KELSO is also survived by one brother, William G. WALLACE of Fredonia,
Pa. Short funeral services were held at the home of her son B. M. KELSO, at
Canonsburg Saturday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock, and at two o'clock in the
United Presbyterian Church at Venice.
Hugh M. GLASS, aged 75 years, died at his home in Robinson township, one
mile north of the McDonald water works, on Wednesday evening, October 24,
1917, at 9:20 o'clock. Mr. GLASS was born in Robinson township, Allegheny
County, and twenty-eight years ago moved to his farm in Robinson township,
Washington County. He was one of the most successful farmers of the
township, and was a veteran of the Civil War, and a member of Robinson
United Presbyterian Church. His wife died August 22, 1910. He is survived
by four sons and one daughter: Albert P., Samuel James, William H., Robert
John, and Elizabeth, at home. The funeral services will be held Saturday
afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Mr. CARSON of Robinson
Church.
Raymond YOUNG, aged 25 years, died at this home at Oakdale about four o'
clock Sunday evening, October 21, 1917. Death was caused by neutritis (sic)
of the throat. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Martha YOUNG, two
brothers, John at home and Ward at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga. Funeral
services were held at the late home Tuesday evening and on Wednesday the
body was taken to Bradford for interment.
Galen DOWLER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. DOWLER, died very suddenly on
Tuesday evening, October 23, 1917, about 9:30 o'clock. He had been ill only
a few days and his death came as a shock to the community. He was aged 18
years and 8 days, and was born in Cross Creek township October 15, 1899. He
is survived by his parents and four younger brothers, Audley, Verne, Kenneth
ad Clifford. The funeral will be held from the home this (Friday) afternoon
at 2:30 o'clock, by the Rev. Earl D. MILLER, pastor of the United
Presbyterian Church, of which the young man was a member. He was also a
member of the Patriotic Order, Sons of America. Interment will be in the
Center Cemetery.
