Lester ROGERS was killed in an automobile accident Monday night, November
10, 1924. The accident happened between nine and ten o'clock, near Artesia,
N. M., while Mr. ROGERS was en route from Artesia to Wichita Falls. He was
found dead, pinned beneath the steering wheel of his overturned car,
according to the message received by his sister, Mrs. Thomas W. SHUPE of
Station street, McDonald. Mr. ROGERS leaves a wife, also a daughter, Mary,
aged about nineteen years. His aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry ROGERS,
former residents of McDonald, now live in Mars, Butler county. The dead man
was engaged in the oil industry and was quite successful as an operator.
His body is being brought to Meadville, where the burial will take place.
J. Stanley GELSTON, whose death was noted last week in this column, was not
colored, as was erroneously stated in the local papers. Mr. GELSTON had
been for several years superintendent of the Fayette mine at Noblestown and
at the time of his death resided with his family in the large house provided
by the company for that official. Though quite a young man for the
responsible position he held he was well qualified, being a man of keen
intelligence. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Norma and Betty.
Percy THOMPSON, 43 years old, a prominent colored man of this locality,
died at midnight Monday, November 10, 1924, at his home at Reissing after an
illness of several months of pulmonary tuberculosis. Mr. THOMPSON was an
organizer of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of Lincoln
Lodge, F. & A. M. of McDonald. His wife and seven children survive.
The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the First Baptist
church, McDonald. Interment was in the Venice cemetery.
J. Stanley GELSTON, whose death was noted last week in this column, was not
colored, as was erroneously stated in the local papers. Mr. GELSTON had
been for three years superintendent of the Fayette mine at Noblestown. When
her he resided in the large house provided by the company for that official
and with his family he attended the Noblestown United Presbyterian church.
He resigned because of ill health and was succeeded by James ROY, Jr., the
present superintendent. Though quite a young man for the responsible
position he held, he was well qualified, being a man of keen intellect.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Miss Norma and Miss Betty, away at
school, and one son, James Stanley, aged 13 years. His mother, Mrs. Mary
GELSTON of the Eastend, Pittsburgh, also survives.
James ROY, Jr. and family, Mr. and Mr. James GRAHAM and Mr. and Mrs.
George H. BAUMAN of Noblestown attended the funeral services.
Mrs. Hannah HALLIWELL, aged 83 years, died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Henry JACKSON, in Valley street, Wednesday morning, November 12, 1924
at 5:20 o'clock. Mrs. HALLIWELL had suffered from the infirmities due to
age for some time. On Sunday her daughter, seeing that she was asleep, left
her for a few minutes to attend to some household duties, and during this
brief interval, Mrs. HALLIWELL go up, went to the front door and fell down
to the ground, a distance of four feet. She was born in Bradford, England,
and came to McDonald forty years ago. Her husband, Samuel HALLIWELL, died
four weeks ago. She leaves her daughter and three grandchildren. A sister
in England also survives. Mrs. HALLIWELL had been a member of the First
Presbyterian church of McDonald for thirty-seven years.
Funeral services will be held at the JACKSON home in Valley street Friday
afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of the Rev. B. B. HARRISON. Interment
will be in the Robinson's Run cemetery.
