Subject: MASON-DIXON line and indian trader STEELMAN TRENT LOGSDON

I would guess that indian trader,and my many great uncle,Swede Capt Johan
Hance Steelman,grandfather of Capt Hance Hamilton, was the 1st permanent
settler in ADAMS CO,PA. And it was not accidental he lived in the "NO
MAN's Land" near the disputed MD-PA line .[years later surveyed by
MASON-DIXON. 1ST New SWEDEN was 1638-56 on the DELAWARE RIVER,and when
the Quaker merchants came 1680's, they often used the SWEDES as their
back-in-the-woods agent. Though Capt Johan Hance Steelman was the money
man behind the bullding ,1697 era,of HOLY TRINTITY-OLD SWEDES LUTHERIAN
in Wilmington,Del,even then he lived on the ELK in Cacil Co, ne most Md.
And,though much of his Indian trading from there was up the DELAWARE,and
the Susquhanna,into Pa, he was avoiding a Pa GOVERNMENT Indian trading
lisence. And their are PENN ARCHIVES records of them trying to make him
get one. Then,when on the Conastoga in sw Lancaster,Co Pa, his
appentice-FRENCH son of MADAM LeTART, stole from STEELMAN,and fled. And
STEELMAN sent his indians to track down LeTart,and bring him back "dead
or alive". And was "dead". So the Pa government had a 2nd charge vs him.
The Md government was using him as Indian interpeter. With no map,I'LL
place his home just east of a gap in the mountian range to the west.
I have a theory-unproven. That GRACEHAM Moravian,in n FRED CO
MD,started out as a SWEDISH LUTHERIAN attended by STEELMAN. I
know,-fact- that the SWEDISH MINISTER who converted GRACEHAM from
LUTHERIAN to MORAVIAN,1740'S-REV NILS LYBURG [?] was the same minister
who ministered,and then converted the SWEDISH LUTHERIAN congregation at
SWEDESBORO,NJ-at the same time, from LUTHERIAN TO MORAVIAN.
I know nothing of Capt HANCE's dau m to -HAMILTON,and abit about their
son,Capt -SHERIFF Capt Hance Hamilton. Bet the old man breathed easier
with his grandson as sheriff of YORK CO.
Know some about the indian trader WM TRENT. Have a map showing nw ADAMS
CO PA mountians as TRENT'S MONTIANS, and the pass thru them,TRENT'S Gap.
He traded as far west as WESTERN OHIO,1752,perhaps with my many great
uncle-EDWARD LOGSDON.
