Ethel,
Births and deaths, whether at Pittsburgh or New Castle, started in 1906.
From 1880 or 1885 (can't remember which), the records for ALLEGHENY COUNTY
can be found on the mezzanine level of the Recorder of Wills Office in the
City-County Bldg on Grant St. Before that, there is no official
registration. You're only hope is in church records or, possibly, one of
the newspapers at that time or the family bible.

Does this apply to births and deaths as far back as 1840?
Where would we find records for Allegheny City for 1844?
