Like I said, I could be wrong...I know that there's a St. Claird
neighborhood in the Knoxville/Mt. Oliver area, but that's today....I will
have to try to remember where I heard the Arlington Heights area referred to
as St. Claire.\

Bryan,

St Clair Twp was one of the original townships formed when Allegheny County
was created. St Clair went from the banks of the Mon and Ohio Rivers to the
Washington County line and was between Fayette and Mifflin Twps. I suspect
that the borders were Chartiers Creek in the West and Streets Run Creek in
Hays Sometimes in the 1830s, St Clair Twp was divided into Upper St Clair
and Lower St Clair. I don't know exactly where the division was between
Upper and Lower or why they where named that way. Geographically they
appear backward to me. In any event, I have never heard of a township
office for Lower St Clair. Over the years, however, as the little towns in
the twp grew, they seemed to be dissatisfied for some reason and petitioned
the courts to form their own twps. Hence, we have had Baldwin, Castle
Shannon, Mt Lebanon and Union twps and the boroughs of Carrick, Mt Oliver,
Greentree, Banksville, Temperanceville, Mt Washington, Beltzhoover,
Allentown, Knoxville, Ormsby, West Pgh, South Pgh, E. Birmingham and
Birmingham and probably a few more whom I've forgotten. Oh, I also forgot
to add the areas in the city called Seldom Seen and Shalerville. I've never
heard of the existence of a city called "City of St. Claire". I used to
have a map from city planning showing the locations and dates of boroughs as
they were annexed by Pgh but I don't know where it's at but the last
annexation was around 1955 in the vicinity of Mt Oliver.

Hmmm....Al, correct me if I'm worng, but wasn't the City of St. Claire what
is now the Arlington Heights area of Pittsburgh? I seem to remember
hearing/reading something to that effect, but I could be wrong.

Listers,
Have a cousin, whose father's birth certificate list his place of birth
as City of St. Claire. The father when to school and married at St.
Joseph Church of Mt. Oliver. I have never heard Lower St. Clair Boro
referred to in this way. However, my husband tells me he heard my
father say that several times. I have done a little research and so far
found nothing. Has anyone on the list any information that would shed
any light on this. The person was born in 1921and Lower St. Clair
became a part of the city in Feb of1924 Helen L>
